What is Treatment Like? PDF Print E-mail

Neurosong's treatment process consists of four (4) steps::

Step 1: Assessment

Administer a diagnostic and functional assessment of the client’s strengths and needs in the areas of: physical health, cognitive functioning, emotional well-being, social ability, and communication skills. A long-term assessment (e.g. with a child with autism) may include a music therapy session, interviews with parents and care-givers, and consultations with other treatment professionals. A short-term assessment (e.g. on an inpatient unit) may include a brief consultation with another treatment professional, therapist observation, and asking the client.

Step 2: Goal-Setting

Based on assessment results, develop functional, non-musical goals and objectives to be addressed during treatment are set.

Step 3: Treatment

Design music-based interventions to target the established goals and objectives. Possible interventions include: singing, playing instruments, improvising, song writing/composition, lyric analysis, or adaptive music lessons. This step includes transferring the therapeutic learning to real-world applications.

Step 4: Evaluation

Includes data collection/documentation and consistent evaluations of the established goals and objectives.

The treatment process may be more formalized when working with an individual client over a long period of time, or it may happen more spontaneously when working with a client in a single session. Clients can undergo treatment in individual or group sessions. Music therapists will often work closely with members of the interdisciplinary team to help plan and support a range of outcomes.
